Based off a precious Chinese legend similar to Romeo and Juliet, The Butterfly Lovers is a wuxia retelling of a classic story. Charlene Choi stars as Zhu Yanzhi, the daughter of a noble who is sent off to a martial arts school dressed as a man; there she meets Liang Zhangshan (Wu Chun) who is charged with treating her like a little brother until she can be tested for her skill after 100 days. But as Zhu finds herself strangely attracted to Liang as if by fate and worried about her gender being discovered something terrible happens to her family that will threaten everything, especially the love Zhu has for Liang.

Disappointing despite it's promising premise, this rendition of the tale falls short on just about every level. While the fighting scenes are both believable and enjoyable the romance is too quick, the plot laid in a confusing manner, and the special effect butterflies too silly to take seriously. Unless viewers like romance and wuxia, most should just stay clear... this movie is lacking of serious entertainment value.
